DLSS 5 ships on RTX 50 cards with one supported game
Nvidia's DLSS 5 arrived on 3 September in NBA 2K27 alone, running as a neural pass after the engine has finished the frame — with masking controls that exist mainly to keep it off your characters.
Nvidia's DLSS 5 went live on 3 September with exactly one supported game, NBA 2K27. It runs on every GeForce RTX 50 series desktop card and laptop, and on GeForce NOW Ultimate instances backed by RTX 5080s. RTX 40 and 30 owners get nothing at launch, so for most small teams this is a feature aimed at a slice of their audience rather than the bulk of it.
The technology underneath is called 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, and the detail worth holding on to is where it sits: at the very end of the graphics pipeline, after the engine has finished its work. Nvidia's model takes the rendered frame along with motion vectors, surface albedo, lighting and normals, then adds the material behaviour that real-time budgets normally force teams to strip out — subsurface scattering through skin, light transmitting through hair and foliage, deeper contact shadows and global illumination. Unlike a diffusion model it is deterministic and runs one frame in, one frame out, so identical input produces identical output and a character's face cannot drift between frames.
That placement is the thing to think about. A neural pass running after your renderer can restate work you spent weeks authoring, which is presumably why most of the controls Nvidia shipped exist to hold it back. Through the DLSS 5 SDK developers choose between several sets of model weights and can mix them per scene — one for dense outdoor foliage, another for dramatic interiors, a third for cutscenes. Structure Intensity governs high-frequency additions such as ambient occlusion, reflections and subsurface scattering. Tone Intensity governs broader lighting and colour response, and setting it to zero keeps the exact colours the engine produced. Semantic masking recognises objects automatically, so the environment can be pushed while characters are left alone, and engine-level masking gives per-pixel control over specific props.
Visual Concepts reached straight for that last one. The studio applied a per-pixel uplift mask to tune detail on players, wanting to "respect their likeness with the utmost care", according to senior producer Peter Kavic. The athletes in NBA 2K27 are scanned from real people, and their faces are the one part of the frame that cannot be allowed to wander.
That is also where the criticism landed when Nvidia first showed the technology in the spring, and 80 Level notes it has not gone away: faces that came out looking generated rather than rendered. Nvidia has not published a straight on-versus-off performance comparison either, and the frame rates in its launch materials were captured with Multi Frame Generation running in 6X mode, which makes the underlying render rate hard to read.
One line from Nvidia's own write-up is worth keeping. Output quality scales with the fidelity of the input, and ray-traced or path-traced lighting yields markedly better results than raster. DLSS 5 is not a way to skip the lighting work — it is a way to finish it.
